Flags Lowered in Honor of Fallen Airman

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Air Force Technical Sergeant Matthew S. Schwartz of Traverse City, Michigan. TSGT Schwartz, 34, died in the Helmand province of Afghanistan when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. He was an explosive ordnance disposal specialist assigned to the 90th Civil Engineer Squadron at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming.

Schwartz was a 1996 graduate of Traverse City Central High School and served 12 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was on his sixth deployment. His awards and decorations include: the Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Combat Action Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, three Bronze Stars with two oak leaf clusters and one V device (the final bronze star issued for heroism).

Library Holiday Hours

The library will be CLOSED from Friday, December 23 through Monday, December 26 for the Christmas holiday weekend, and also from Friday, December 30 through Monday, January 2 for the New Year's holiday weekend. While the library is closed, drop boxes will be available near the north (parking lot) entrance to the building for return of library materials, and these boxes will be monitored and emptied by library staff throughout the holiday weekends. All of our electronic services, including our online library catalog, databases, digital archive and media download center will remain available 24/7 through our web site.

Flags Lowered in Honor of Congressman Wolpe

In accordance with an order from the office of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, the library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of former U.S. Rep. Howard Wolpe of Saugatuck, who died October 25.

Wolpe was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978. He represented southwestern Michigan and served seven terms. He was chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on Africa from 1982 to 1992, where he played an instrumental role in the changes to U.S. policy on Africa, including enabling the passage of the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986. He also chaired the Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee. His other roles in Congress included co-chairing the bipartisan Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition and the Congressional Energy and Environmental Study Conference. Prior to entering Congress, he served in the Michigan House of Representatives and as a member of the Kalamazoo City Commission.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant Vincent J. Bell of Detroit, Michigan. Staff Sergeant Bell, 28, died Nov. 30 in the Helmand province of Afghanistan while conducting combat operations. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion of the 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Pendleton in California.

SSGT Bell was a two-time recipient of the Purple Heart, awarded twice the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two Combat Action Ribbons, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Navy Unit Commendation, three Marine Corp Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, three Iraqi Campaign Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and four Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of U.S. Army Private First Class Jackie Lee Diener II of Boyne City, Michigan. Diener, 20, died Nov. 21 in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division in Fort Drum, New York.

PFC Diener joined the Army in March of 2011 and arrived at Fort Drum in July. He served as a cavalry scout and had been deployed since September. His awards and decorations include: the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/Bronze Service Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat and Special Skills Badge Basic Marksmanship Qual Badge. He was awarded posthumously the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the NATO Medal, and the Combat Action Medal.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Operator Chief Petty Officer Heath M. Robinson, a Navy SEAL, of Petoskey, Michigan. Chief Robinson, 34, was among 30 service members killed on Aug.6 while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Their helicopter was shot down by enemy forces in Afghanistan's Wardak province.

Chief Robinson was assigned to the East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare Unit. He enlisted in the Navy in January 1996 and completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL school in Coronado, Calif., in January 2000. His decorations include four Bronze Star Medals, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, a Combat Action Ribbon, two Presidential Unit Citations, a Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, five Navy Good Conduct Medals, the Navy Fleet Marine Force Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, two Afganistan Campaign Medals, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, six Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, the NATO Medal, the Navy Expert Rifleman Medal and the Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of U.S. Army Capt. Drew Russell of Scotts, Michigan. Capt. Russell, 25, died Oct. 8 of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with a rocket-propelled grenade in the Kandahar province in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo. He joined the Army in 2008 and his first overseas deployment was to Afghanistan on June 13.

Capt. Russell's personal decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Parachutist Badge and the Overseas Service Bar. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge.

In Memory of Carolyn Horton

Mount Clemens Public Library has lost a great friend in the death earlier this week of Carolyn Horton, one of our long time genealogy volunteers. Carolyn was an active member of the Macomb County Genealogy Group and donated thousands of hours of indexing time to the development of the local history databases that are so valuable to our researchers. Computer work was one of her special skills and we have her efforts to thank for much of the retrospective data entry that was done in our obituary index.

In addition to the indexing and data entry work that she did, Carolyn was a cheerful volunteer assistant in the genealogy room, and helped many library patrons further their family research. In recent months she lived with her daughter in Arizona while battling illness, but despite her struggles she did not forget her genealogy friends in Mount Clemens and kept in touch through calls and e-mails. We, likewise, will never forget Carolyn. She will be greatly missed.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor ofU.S. Marine Staff Sergeant Nicholas A. Sprovtsoff of Davison, Michigan. Staff Sergeant Sprovtsoff, 28, died while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan on Sept. 28. He was assigned to the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command at Camp Pendleton, California, and was a 10-year veteran of the Marines. He served five tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Staff Sergeant Sprovtsoff's personal decorations include the Bronze Star with combat V, the Army Commendation Medal, the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat V, two Army Achievement Medals, two Combat Action Ribbons and two Good Conduct Medals. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of U.S. Army Specialist Chazray C. Clark of Ecorse, Michigan. Specialist Clark, 24, died Sept. 18 of injuries sustained during an attack by insurgents with an improvised explosive device in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. He joined the Army in 2009 and deployed to Afghanistan with the 4-4 Calvary in February 2011.

Specialist Clark was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Service Medal with Bronze service star, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge, the Combat and Special Skill Badge, the Basic Marksmanship Qualifications Badge, the Rifle Expert Marksmanship Badge and the Overseas Service Bar. He received the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal and the NATO Medal posthumously.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of U.S. Army Corporal Joseph A. VanDreumel of Standale, Michigan. Corporal VanDreumel, 32, died Aug. 14 in the Paktika province of Afghanistan while conducting vehicle recovery operations and encountering a secondary explosion. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Regiment in the 172nd Infantry Brigade stationed in Grafenwoehr, Germany. He joined the Army in January 2010 and trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky, before serving in Germany from August 2010 through July 2011 and then Afghanistan.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of U.S. Navy Seaman Aaron D. Ullom, 20, of Midland, Michigan, who died July 12 while conducting a dismounted patrol in the Helmand province of Afghanistan.

Seaman Ullom served as a Hospital Corpsman for the Navy and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He deployed to Afghanistan in February for his first tour of duty. Ullom’s awards include National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and NATO Medal – ISAF Afghanistan.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Staff Sgt. Joshua A. Throckmorton , 28, of Battle Creek, Michigan. Staff Sgt. Throckmorton died July 5 in Paktia province, Afghanistan of injuries suffered from an improvised explosive device.

Throckmorton was assigned to the 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command in Hohenfels, Germany. He served 15 months in Iraq and was three months into a one-year deployment in Afghanistan. He was awarded posthumously a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Collectible and Used Book Sale Coming Soon

Our annual used book sale is right around the corner, so mark your calendars now for the week of August 9-13! This year, in addition to thousands of subject-sorted hardcover and paperback books of interest to all ages, we will offer a nice selection of rare and collectible volumes. These collector items are individually priced, but still priced to sell, so sharp-eyed collectors may find some real bargains!

If you'd like to be among the first to shop the sale, our preview night will be held on Tuesday, August 9, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Admission is $10 per person, and allows customers to shop the sale before it opens to the general public. Regular sale hours are Wednesday, August 10 and Thursday, August 11, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. On Friday, August 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., all items will be sold at half price. On Saturday, August 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., shoppers may fill a grocery bag with items of their choice for a flat fee of $5 per bag. On Monday, August 15, any unsold items will be free.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Private First Class Brian J. Backus of Harbor Beach, Michigan. Backus, age 21, died June 18 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire.

Backus was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division of Fort Drum, New York. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Medical Badge. Backus deployed with his unit in March 2011 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Spc. Voakes was assigned to 793rd Military Police Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Voakes’ awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal, in addition to his promotion to Specialist posthumously.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Detroit police officer Charles Armour, 40, who died on June 11 from injuries received in the line of duty. Officer Armour was on foot patrol in the Greektown area on June 5 when he was intentionally struck by a vehicle he was trying to stop and critically injured. He was a seventeen year veteran of the Detroit Police Department.

Adult Summer Reading Program Kicks Off Today

The library's adult summer reading club runs today through August 26, and we are encouraging adult readers to travel the world through books! Each time an adult library card holder checks out books or audiobooks, he or she may complete an entry slip for one of our fun prize drawings, which will be conducted periodically throughout the program. Digital checkouts count also, so please tell us if you download e-books or audiobooks from the library's Media Download Center.

Eagle Scout Project Enhances Children's Room

The next time you are in the library, be sure to take time to admire the colorful new display endcaps that were recently installed on the book stacks in the Children's Room. This project was conceived, designed and executed by one of our Children's Room pages, Patrick, as part of the requirements for his Eagle Scout ranking. The new endcaps allow for face-out display of library materials in a flexible format. The library is very grateful to Patrick for all of his hard work and thank his entire team of helpers for doing such a professional job.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ergin V. Osman, 35, of Harrison Township. Staff Sgt. Osman was killed along with five other soldiers by an improvised explosive device on May 26. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), in Fort Campbell, Ky. This was his ninth deployment and he received numerous decorations.

Former Kilpatrick Bodyguard to Speak at Library

Walter L. Harris, Jr., once a police bodyguard for former Detroit mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick, will present his new book, Badge of Honor, at Mount Clemens Public Library on Monday, May 23 at 12:00 p.m.

Harris served meritoriously as a police officer in some of Detroit's most dangerous precincts before joining the department's Executive Protection Unit (EPU). He left the EPU when he could no longer remian silent about the corruption he witnessed in the Kilpatrick adminstration. Harris "blew the whistle" that not only led to changes in city government, but also resulted in personal harrassment and veiled threats to his life. Easy Ways to Check Your Library Account 24/7

Did you know that you can check the status of your library account 24/7, even when the library is closed? One way is to call our automated phone line, available around the clock. Simply dial 586-203-8725 from a touch-tone phone and have your library card number and PIN ready. After you have entered these numbers at the prompt, you will be able to select from an automated menu to hear the titles and due dates of items you have checked out, items you have on hold, and any overdues and fine amounts on your record. You may also renew items, if they are eligible for renewal, through this service.

Another way to check your account information is to log in through our online library catalog. Once on our catalog site, simply click the "My Account" option on the menu line, and select "Review My Account" or "Renew My Materials." You will be asked to enter your library card number and your PIN to do this. Our library catalog is also available for iPhone and iPad mobile devices. Just download the free BookMyne app from the iTunes app store and the library catalog can go wherever you go.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Army Private First Class Robert Friese, 21, of Harrison, Michigan. PFC Friese died April 29 in Al Qadisiyah province, Iraq, of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with a rocket propelled grenade. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas. Friese’s awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medals, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.

Library Overdue Notices Go Paperless

As of June 1, 2011, Mount Clemens Public Library will no longer print and mail overdue notices to library patrons. Instead, overdue notices will be sent to our patrons in one of two ways: by e-mail, if you have chosen to provide your e-mail address to us; or, by an automated phone call generated by our library cooperative's computer system.

This step is being taken to reduce costs as the library faces steep declines in operating revenues due to the current economic situation in Michigan. Generating e-mail and phone notices will save significant dollars in printing and postage costs. You can help us by verifying with a library staff member that the telephone number and/or e-mail address that we have on file for you is correct and current.

Please also understand that providing overdue notices is a courtesy service of the library and not a requirement. Every person who checks out material from Mount Clemens Public Library assumes full responsibility for returning that material on time or paying the associated fines and replacement invoices for that material, regardless of whether an overdue notice has been provided.

Lance Corporal Ciaramitaro died April 23 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was an antitank missleman assigned to 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Colleen Burcar has been a radio and TV personality in the Detroit area for many years, including two decades with Dick Purtan. She was a columnist for the Detroit News, and has authored numerous other books on the state of Michigan, including Michigan Curiosities.

Officer Zapata, 35, a 10-year veteran of the force, was shot and killed after he and other officers were dispatched on a report of shots fired in Kalamazoo's Edison neighborhood.

Hospitalman Rast, 23, died April 6, 2011 while conducting a dismounted patrol northeast of Patrol Base Alcatraz, Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned as a hospitalman to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment 2nd Marine Division. Rast was stationed at Naval Medical Center, Expeditionary Medical Force Detachment in San Diego, California. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Pistol Marksmanship Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Macomb County Court Records Index Now Available

The Macomb County Genealogy Group and Mount Clemens Public Library are pleased to announce the debut of the Macomb County Court Records index. This index, which is a work in progress, is being created from 182 original volumes of Macomb County Circuit Court journals, chancery journals, and records of divorce proceedings which are part of the library's local history collection. Volunteer indexers from the Macomb County Genealogy Group are extracting all relevant names from these records, which include criminal, civil, chancery, appeals and divorce records. Once a case number has been identified through the index, the journal entries (not the case files themselves) related to the case may be viewed at Mount Clemens Public Library.

Many thanks to all of our dedicated volunteers who have put so much effort into the creation of this index, especially Ann Faulkner, who chairs the project.

Mount Clemens City Directory Database Updated

An update to our Mount Clemens City Directory database has now made available data from the 1929 city directory in our master index. This index is useful for researchers working on local history or genealogy projects, and currently covers Mount Clemens city directories published between the years 1896 and 1929. Copies of the city directories are available in the local history and genealogy room of Mount Clemens Public Library.

Flags Lowered in Honor of Last WWI Veteran

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of the memory of Army Corporal Frank W. Buckles, the last surviving American veteran of World War I, who died February 27 at the age of 110.

Buckles enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 16 after lying about his age in order to qualify. He is being laid to rest today at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Sgt. Kristopher J. Gould, 25, of Frankenlust Township, who died in the Ghazni province Sunday, February 27, 2011, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Sgt. Gould began his military service with the Michigan Army National Guard in 2003 and joined the United States Army in 2006. He served three tours of duty in the Middle East and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart posthumously.

Fire Department Records Now Available at the Library

Mount Clemens Public Library is pleased to announce that the historical records of Mount Clemens Volunteer Fire Department #3 are now available in the library's local history collection. Recently, the department made its fire run journals, which cover the years 1908 to 2009, available to the library for microfilming and indexing. These record books are a diary of each call the volunteer fire department answered, and usually include the date, location, type of fire or event, and the names of the fire fighters in attendance. The records are useful for individuals who are researching the history of a house or property in Mount Clemens, and for genealogy researchers who want to know more about events that shaped a family's history, or wish to establish a family's address in between census years.

The fire department records were indexed by library staff and the index may be searched online by visiting http://offserv.libcoop.net/mtc/mtcfires.asp. The index is searchable by surname or business name, and also by street address. Copies of the record books are available for public use in microfilm format. Library supporter Lorelei Maison Rockwell, who has a keen understanding of the value of this type of local record to researchers, generously provided the funds to pay for the microfilming of the fire run journals.

The library is most grateful to Captain Tom Fisher and the members of Mount Clemens Volunteer Fire Department #3 for making their records available to researchers, and to Lorelei Maison Rockwell for making it possible to have them microfilmed.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of United States Border Patrol Agent Brian A. Terry, who was killed in the line of duty on December 14.

Agent Terry, of Flat Rock, Michigan, was working with a squad attempting to intercept drug smugglers on the Arizona-Mexico border when he was killed in a resulting gun battle.

Brian Terry was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Ecorse Police Department, and Lincoln Park Police Department.

It's Never Too Late to Return a Library Book!

Last week, the library received an amazing letter from long-time patron Mark T. McKee, who is currently wintering in Arizona. Mr. McKee wrote the library director to ask his pardon for a book in his possession, overdue from Mount Clemens Public Library for the past 76 years! It seems that Mr. McKee had checked out the book, entitled A Dog of Flanders, from the library in 1934, when he was a grade-schooler. He never returned it, and has kept it among his treasured possessions all these years. Finding it once again among his belongings, his conscience pricked him and he decided it was time to return the book to its rightful place in the library, so he mailed it back to us with a heartfelt letter of apology.

On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Armed Forces of the United State of America stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, were attacked by the air and naval forces of Imperial Japan. The attack claimed the lives of 2,334 servicemen and servicewomen and wounded another 1,143.

New DVD Checkout Limits Now In Place

As of today, the library has instituted a new procedure for lending its most popular materials, feature DVDs. Circumstances have now forced us to limit the number of DVDs that may be checked out by an individual library patron to two DVDs from the new materials shelf and five DVDs from the regular shelves. These more restrictive borrowing limits have been neccessitated by the unacceptably high rate of loss from this collection to patrons who borrow large numbers of DVDs and fail to return them. Despite our best efforts to recover these materials, including the use of a collection agency, we continue to lose a significant number of DVDs. This is a problem encountered by public libraries throughout the country.

Like other public libraries throughout Michigan, Mount Clemens Public Library is addressing a significant decrease in funding due to current economic conditions and a number of budget cuts have been implemented. Our budget for DVDs simply cannot be stretched far enough to continue to replace -- sometimes more than once -- our high demand movie titles and still continue to purchase the new releases that our patrons want to see.

By limiting DVD checkouts, we hope also to limit our exposure to loss and make the DVDs you want to see available to all. Your understanding and cooperation are appreciated!

All-Day Scrapbooking Crop Coming October 23

Scrapbookers, you won't want to miss our next all-day crop session on Saturday, October 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to this event is a new, unwrapped gift for a boy or girl (ages 11-16), to support Vietnam Veterans' Chapter 154 Operation Christmas. Participants are welcome to come for a few hours or stay all day.

There will be plenty of room to spread out your scrapbooking supplies on one of our 6-foot tables. We will have stations set up throughout the room to demonstrate new embellishment techniques, and a local store, Scrapbook Cafe, will be here from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to offer a wide variety of scrapbook supplies for purchase. We will also have raffles and door prizes throughout the day.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Marine Sergeant Jason D. Calo of Mancelona who died August 22 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sgt. Calo, age 23, died from injuries suffered while supporting combat operations. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Pfc. Rappuhn, age 24, died from injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia.

In Memory of Lena E. Muendelein

Mount Clemens Public Library has lost a friend and former staff member in the death of Lena E. Muendelein on Thursday, August 12. Mrs. Muendelein was a reference clerk at the library for nearly 17 years, beginning her career in October 1967 when the library was still housed in the old Carnegie building (now the Anton Art Center). Over the years, until her retirement in June 1984, Mrs. Muendelein assisted patrons in both the adult and children's departments of the library, maintained the pamphlet files, and assisted with library programs.

Even after her retirement, she was a regular visitor at the library as her health allowed. She will be missed.

Funeral services for Lena Muendelein will be held on Monday, August 16 at 11 a.m. at the Will & Schwarzkoff Funeral Home. You may read the obituary notice by clicking here.

Jacob Lawrence Exhibit Now on Display

Mount Clemens Public Library is pleased to host a traveling art exhibit entitled "Jacob Lawrence and the Legend of John Brown" during the month of August 2010.

The exhibit is a collaboration between the Wayne State University Library System and the Wayne State University Art Collection, and comprises ten panels featuring reproductions of twenty-two paintings by noted African-American artist Jacob Lawrence. Lawrence, who was the first African-American artist to have his work included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, produced his John Brown series in the 1940s, along with numerous other works depicting historical figures from the African American experience in the United States.

The Jacob Lawrence traveling exhibit, which was funded by a grant from the Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET), is available for viewing at Mount Clemens Public Library, 150 Cass Avenue, through the end of August.

Mark your calendars now for the library's used book sale, which will be held Tuesday, August 10 through Saturday, August 14. There will be a wide selection of books for all ages, and everything is priced to sell!

For easy shopping, book sale materials are sorted into categories. A special preview sale will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 10, for those discerning bargain hunters who would like to have first pick of the merchandise. Admission to the preview sale is $10 per person.

Regular sale hours (no admission fee) will be 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 11 and Thursday, August 12, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:oo p.m. on Friday, August 13 and Saturday, August 14. Friday, August 13 will be BAG DAY, where shoppers will be invited to fill a standard size grocery bag with their choice of books for one low price. On Saturday, August 14, all remaining book sale merchandise will be FREE.

Cpl. DeBoer, age 24, died of wounds suffered while on foot patrol supporting combat operations when an improvised explosive device detonated. He was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Specialist Johnson, age 24, died of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 161st Engineer Support Company, 27th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Airborne), 20th Engineer Brigade, 18th Airborne Corps, Fort Brag, North Carolina.

The family of Cpl. Standfest has requested that flags be lowered Friday, June 25. His funeral service is Saturday, June 26, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Macomb Township. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Air Force 1st Lieutenant Joel C. Gentz who died along side three fellow airmen June 9 near Forward Operating Base Jackson, Afghanistan, while on active duty supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

First Lieutenant Gentz, age 25, died of wounds suffered in a helicopter crash while on a rescue mission in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 58th Rescue Squadron, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

Park & Read Passes Now Available

The library is pleased to be a participant in the Park & Read program this summer. Park & Read is a partnership between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Library of Michigan. The program allows library card holders to check out a day pass good for free admission to any Michigan State Park or Recreation Area.

Passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis only, and may not be reserved. Each pass is good for free entry of one vehicle at the park entry point (a savings of $6). Passes are good for day use only, and may not be used to cover camping or other fees. Each pass is dated and is good for seven days from the time of checkout.

Summer Library Hours Now in Effect

The library's summer hours of service are now in effect. We will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays through the Labor Day weekend. Weekday hours are unchanged: Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

As always, the library's electronic services are available around the clock, seven days a week, and may be accessed through the main menu of our web site at www.mtclib.org. These services include the online library catalog, through which cardholders may request and renew library materials; the library events calendar; our database menu; the digital media archive, which includes thousands of historic photos and documents; and our media download center, which allows cardholders to download talking books, ebooks, music and video to their personal computers or mobile devices.

Users of the iPhone may also use the mobile version of our library catalog.

Flags Lowered in Honor of Sailor Killed in Pearl Harbor Attack

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Navy Fireman 3c Gerald George Lehman, of Calumet, Michigan. F3c Lehman was killed aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, and his unidentified remains were interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii.

In recent years, the U.S. military has been using advances in DNA techniques to identify previously unknown remains and return them to family members. Using DNA harvested from the envelope flaps of letters that F3c Lehman had sent home to his family during the war, a positive match was recently made and F3c Lehman's remains were returned to his family for burial. Gerald George Lehman's remains will be laid to rest with military honors today in Hancock, Michigan.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Marine Lance Corporal Anthony A. DiLisio who died in Helmand province,Afghanistan, while on active duty supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Lance Cpl. DiLisio, age 20, died May 30 of wounds suffered while supporting combat operations. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Lance Cpl. DiLisio’s family has requested that flags be lowered on Monday, June 7, the day of his funeral service at St. Paul of Tarsus Catholic Church in Clinton Township. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery.

Digital Summer Newsletter is Now Available

Flags Lowered in Honor of Fallen Police Officer

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Detroit police officer Brian Huff, who was killed in the line of duty on May 3.

Huff, 42, was killed Monday while responding to a call about gunshots in a vacant home on the 20200 block of Schoenherr in Detroit. Four other officers were injured. Huff is is survived by his wife, Melissa, and a 10-year-old son, Blair.

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Army Sergeant Michael K. Ingram Jr. who died in Kandahar, Afghanistan, while on active duty supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sgt. Ingram, age 23, died April 17 of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado. Sgt. Ingram was promoted from corporal to sergeant upon his death. He also earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart at the time of his death.

Library Hosts School Board Candidates Forum

Mount Clemens Public Library will host a public forum to introduce candidates for the Mount Clemens Community School District Board of Education on April 27, 2010, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Three candidates are seeking two open seats on the Board of Education in the Tuesday, May 4 election. The candidates are challengers Dr. David J. McFadden and Sabina M. Turner, and incumbent Laura M. Kropp. During the public forum, candidates will make opening and closing statements and respond to written questions from the audience. The event will be moderated by Library Director Donald E. Worrell, Jr.

The foum is open to the public and will be held in the library auditorium.
