The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Eric Zapata, who was killed in the line of duty on April 18. Officer Zapata, 35, a 10-year veteran of the force, was shot and killed after he and other officers were dispatched on a report of shots fired in Kalamazoo's Edison neighborhood.

The library will be CLOSED from Friday, April 22 through Sunday, April 24 in observance of the Easter holiday weekend. Regular library hours will resume on Monday, April 25 at 9:00 a.m. While the building is closed, all of the library's electronic services, including our online catalog, digital archive, databases, media download center and events calendar will be available 24/7 through the library's web site. Outdoor bookdrops will remain available near the north (parking lot) entrance to the building and will be emptied by library staff during the holiday weekend. Have a safe and happy holiday!

The library's flags are flying at half-staff today in honor of U.S. Navy Hospitalman Benjamin D. Rast of Niles, Michigan. Hospitalman Rast, 23, died April 6, 2011 while conducting a dismounted patrol northeast of Patrol Base Alcatraz, Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned as a hospitalman to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment 2nd Marine Division. Rast was stationed at Naval Medical Center, Expeditionary Medical Force Detachment in San Diego, California. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Pistol Marksmanship Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

The library's flags have been lowered to half-staff in honor of Michigan State Police Trooper Jeffrey Werda, who died in the line of duty this morning while assisting the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department.
