Announcing the Elizabeth Blay Maison Schelling Local History Writing Contest!
The library is pleased to announce the Elizabeth Blay Maison Schelling Local History Writing Contest. This program is sponsored by genealogist and author Lorelei Maison Rockwell, in memory of her mother, Elizabeth Blay Maison Schelling, and seeks to encourage student writing and interest in our local history.
The contest is open to students attending any public, private, parochial or home school within the boundaries of the Mount Clemens Community School District/Mount Clemens Public Library District. Division I is for students in grades 6-8, and Division II is for students in grades 9-12.
Essays should be no less than 500 and no more than 1000 words, and must discuss a person, event, place or building related to the history of Macomb County or one of its communities. Contestants are encouraged to visit local libraries, museums and historical societies to conduct research and gather information related to the topic. Essays must be submitted to Mount Clemens Public Library by Friday, October 31, 2008. A three-judge panel will select one winning entry in each division, and the winners will each receive a $500 cash prize donated by Lorelei Maison Rockwell, and a certificate of achievement. Winning essays will become the property of Mount Clemens Public Library and will be published on the library's web site. In the event that no submissions meet the contest specifications, the library reserves the right to select no winner.
Contestants should pick up an official contest flyer with complete rules and guidelines for submission at the library.
Our thanks to Lorelei Maison Rockwell for her generous sponsorship of this program, and good luck to all of our contestants!
