Saturday, May 17 is Armed Forces Day. This observance was created in 1949 as a way for American citizens to show appreciation for their military service members. Here in Macomb County, we have thousands of reserve and National Guard forces attached to units at Selfridge Air National Guard base, many of whom have been called away from their families for deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you'd like to add your words of appreciation and support for these troops, here are a couple of great web sites to visit:
www.letssaythanks.com is sponsored by Xerox Corporation. Using this free web site, you can pick out a greeting card and add you own personalized message. Xerox will then print the card and deliver it to an American service member stationed overseas. Notes from home are always welcomed by those who are separated from their families by deployments.
www.americasupportsyou.mil is a clearinghouse site created by the Department of Defense to keep citizens informed about the needs of troops deployed abroad, and to make information available about the many programs offered by organizations, businesses and private citizens in support of the troops. This site will show you how you can contribute to programs offered by the USO, Blue Star Mothers, and many more. You can participate in programs to donate pre-paid phone cards, care packages, frequent flyer miles, and other needed supplies to troops and their families.
Another great way to observe Armed Forces Day is to visit the Selfridge Military Air Museum at Selfridge Air National Guard base. The museum is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Learn about the 90-year history of Selfridge and tour some of the airplanes that have been stationed there over the decades. For more information, visit the museum's web site, or phone 586-307-6768.
